It is sad to say that tooth loss is a common problem, particularly among older seniors. Losing teeth can disrupt your lifestyle and diminish the quality of your life. At Orion Dental Specialties, we offer our patients in Cypress and Houston, Texas, a permanent tooth loss remedy through dental implants. As implants require surgery, your dental implant dentist, Dr. Melanie Farzam, recommends you consider all the aspects of this treatment to ensure it’s right for you.
Here are five essential facts you should know about dental implants:
Although there are multiple dental options for replacing lost teeth, implant treatment is the only one that replaces your tooth and its roots. Small titanium posts are surgically inserted into your jawbone to act like tooth roots. After placement, these posts are given time to fuse with surrounding bone tissue in a process called osseointegration. When the implant posts heal, Dr. Farzam will attach abutments to connect the implant to your restoration and, lastly, your restorations to make your smile whole again.
There are distinct advantages to getting implants over other replacement teeth:
Security: Implant restorations are securely anchored in place by artificial tooth roots to prevent your new teeth from breaking loose when you laugh, talk, bite, or chew.
Natural appeal: Your new teeth will have the same structure as real teeth, giving your smile a natural appearance. When you smile, no one can tell that your pearly whites aren’t real!
No bone loss: Implants stimulate your jaw, like real tooth roots, to keep your jawbone from deteriorating and your facial features from collapsing.
Don’t be intimidated by the thought of painful implant surgery. Dr. Farzam will numb your mouth for this treatment. You won’t feel a thing! We also offer sedation options to ensure your procedure is comfortable, relaxing, and pain-free. Modern surgical techniques make implant placement easier and more accurate than ever, giving you a smooth, quick recovery.
Getting implants is a process that can take months to complete. It’s not a quick fix! After implant surgery, there’s a waiting period of three to six months (or longer) for the implants to heal. We’ll give you temporary replacement teeth in the meantime so you can eat, but it comes with limitations. When the implants heal, Dr. Farzam will re-open your gums, attach abutments to the implants, and let them heal for one or two weeks. Lastly, we’ll attach permanent restorations that were custom-made for your use.
With proper care, implants can last a lifetime, serving as a permanent foundation for your new smile. Implants give you a second chance to have a beautiful new smile for life!
